  • General Information

    1. Classification - 11th edition – single class application. Class 33, alcoholic goods in class 32, and pork meat in class 29 cannot be registered
    2. Search - Possible for word and device marks
    3. Examination - On formal, absolute, and relative grounds
    4. Opposition period - 4 months from publication date
    5. Extension of time - Not possible for filing oppositions, counter oppositions, and responding to office actions
    6. Term of protection - 10 years from filing date and renewable for like periods
    7. Use - Mark vulnerable to cancellation action by any interested parties if there is no effective use of the mark for a period of 5 consecutive years preceding the date of filing for cancellation

  • Filing Requirements

    • Power of Attorney duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate. Should be filed along with the application. 
    • Copy of an Extract from the Commercial Register or Articles of Incorporation or any equivalent document. Should be filed along with the application. 
    • In case of claiming priority, a certified copy of the corresponding home or foreign application of the trademark duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate

  • Renewal

    • Power of Attorney duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate.

  • Assignment

    • Power of Attorney, from the assignee, notarized and legalized by the Qatari Consulate.
    • Deed of assignment, signed by the assignor and the assignee, notarized and legalized by the Qatari Consulate.
    • Copy of an Extract from the Commercial Register or Certificate of Incorporation of the Assignee. The Arabic translation is required.

  • Change of Name and Address

    • Power of Attorney reflecting the new name and/or address, duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate
    • Certificate of Change of Name and/or address, duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate. The Arabic translation is required.

  • Merger

    • Power of Attorney from the entity surviving the merger duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate
    • Certificate of Merger duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate.
    • Copy of an Extract from the Commercial Register or Certificate of Incorporation of the entity surviving the merger. The Arabic translation is required.

  • Licensing

    • Power of Attorney from the licensee duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate.
    • Copy of the License Agreement duly legalized by the Qatari Consulate. The Arabic Translation is required.
    • Photocopy of an Extract from the Commercial Register or Certificate of Incorporation of the Licensee.

  • General Information

    1. Search - Not available at this time
    2. Examination - Formality, novelty, inventiveness and industrial applicability
    3. Publication - Applications will be published upon grant in the official gazette
    4. Opposition period - 60 days from announcement
    5. Annuities - Paid annually on the anniversary of the international filing date and payable before grant. A grace period of 6 months is allowed for late payment of annuities with an extra charge
    6. Term of protection - 20 years from the international filing date

    • Power of attorney legalized by the Qatari Consulate.
    • Certificate of change legalized by the Qatari Consulate.  

  • Patent Merger

    • Power of attorney legalized by the Qatari Consulate.
    • Merger agreement legalized by the Qatari Consulate.

  • Patent Licensing

    • Power of attorney legalized by the Qatari Consulate.
    • License agreement legalized by the Qatari Consulate.

  • General Information

    The Trademarks, Commercial Indications, Trade Names, Geographical Indications, and Industrial Designs & Models Law no. 9 of 2002 came into effect in September 2002. To date, no implementing regulations have been promulgated and the necessary office for receiving design applications is yet to be established. Protection is available only by filing a cautionary notice in the local newspaper, a notice of which can be submitted to the court of law in the event of infringement.
