The Head of the Syrian Trademarks Office has issued on 11 January 2010 a declaration that a special Committee has been established at the Syrian Trademarks Office for implementing the Legislative Decree No. 47/2009 dated 16 August 2009 – which amended Articles 44 and 45 of the Syrian Trademarks, Geographical Indications, Industrial Designs and Unfair Competition Law No. 8 of the year 2007 by adding additional layer of protection to Well-Known trademarks, and further, by enabling the Owners of Well-Known trademarks, even if not registered in Syria, to file a cancellation action against the registration of any trademark identical and/or similar and/or translation of the well-known trademark with the Syrian Trademark Office instead of filing the same with the Court of First Instance. The said Committee will be held on the third day of each month for receiving the cancellation actions from the Owners of Well-Known trademarks starting from February 2010. As for January 2010, the Committee will be held on 13 January 2010 for receiving the cancellation actions from the Owners of Well-Known Trademarks. By virtue of the above declaration, the said committee is obliged to review the cancellation statements and issue its decisions in this respect within one month as of the date of filing the cancellation statement with the Syrian Trademarks Office |
